SEASON 87 - 2025/2026
Welcome to our 87th Season!
The five plays of our upcoming season answer the call of Season 86's theme to build community through theatre. Each play tells a story of finding and using our individual voices to uplift each other, serve our community, and speak truth to power.
Moisés Kaufman, the creator of our acclaimed production of The Laramie Project, recently said: "And I think it is an opportunity to think twice about the work we want to make...and we have to know how powerful we are because we have the stage."
At Lakewood Playhouse we believe in work that entertains, educates and enlightens the full breadth of the human experience. We strive to foster an atmosphere of respect and belonging for ALL, and create a space where everyone is seen, heard, uplifted and empowered. At a time when voices are being silenced and history erased, we believe the job of the theatre is to amplify those voices, encourage uncomfortable conversations and remind us all of our common humanity. We are thrilled to share this season of individuals finding and using their voices, and we hope at last one of these plays speaks to you in a way that inspires you to use your own.

THE REVOLUTIONISTS“Story is the heartbeat of humanity, and humanity gets really dark when the wrong stories are leading the people...”
Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle try to beat back the extremist insanity in the Paris of 1793 in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. This dream-tweaked play is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. “...a sassy, hold-on-to-your-seats theatrical adventure...” - Cincinnati Enquirer “...a blindingly scintillating gem-like puzzle...” - Florida Theater On Stage By Lauren Gunderson Directed by Maria-Tania Bandes B. SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL“A person’s a person, no matter how small, and their whole world was saved by the smallest of all.”
Step into the magical world of Seussical, where Dr. Seuss’s beloved characters come alive in a joyous adventure for the whole family. This enchanting musical immerses audiences in a fantastical journey that sparks laughter, captures hearts, and inspires creativity. The Cat In The Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks". Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. A truly delightful experience that will transport both young and old to a place where imagination knows no bounds, and voices are found and heard! “...brimming with life and energy...” - Broadway World Music by Stephen Flaherty Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens Book by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty Co-conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle Based on the works of Dr. Seuss Directed by Ashley Roy-Simpson Choreography by Courtnee Ramos |

THE NORMAL HEART“…until we organize ourselves block by neighborhood by city by state into a united visible community that fights back, we're doomed. That’s how I want to be defined: as one of the men who fought the war.”
Larry Kramer’s landmark play about love and loss, chronicles the rise of the AIDS crisis in New York City, based on the playwright’s own experiences founding the Gay Men’s Health Crisis in the 1980s. The Normal Heart follows Ned Weeks, a reluctant leader but ferocious activist, as he battles against a world unwilling to confront the truth of the epidemic. As relevant and powerful as ever, this Tony Award-winning drama is a strong indictment against ignorance and a heartfelt story of love, compassion, taking action and speaking the truth. “...a breathtaking play...” - New York Theatre Guide “An angry, unremitting and gripping piece of political theatre.” - New York Daily News By Larry Kramer Directed by Joseph C. Walsh Assistant Direction by Mykahla George |

PIPELINE“I really hate you for being so beautiful and confused. But I’m really glad you aren’t coming back here anymore. Because this place can’t hold you. This place can’t hold none of us.”
Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son Omari opportunities they’ll never have. When a controversial incident at Omari’s upstate private school threatens to get him expelled, Nya must confront both his rage and her own choices as a parent. But will she be able to reach him before a world beyond her control pulls him away? The play draws its name from the “school-to-prison pipeline” which refers to the policies and practices that push our nation’s schoolchildren out of classrooms and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Gwendolyn Brooks’ prophetic poem, “We Real Cool”, is the backdrop of this passionate play about educators who see the humanity in their students and a family fighting social injustice and reroute the pipeline. With profound compassion and lyricism, Pipeline brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the fore. Morisseau pens a deeply moving story of a mother’s fight to give her son a future - without turning her back on the community that made him who he is. “A powerful, passionate, and intelligent new play.” - The Village Voice By Dominique Morisseau Directed by Michelle N. Matlock |

CARRIE THE MUSICAL“Once you see you can't unsee...”
Carrie The Musical is a thrilling and engaging retelling of Stephen King’s classic novel Carrie. It tells the story of Carrie White, a teenager from a small town in New England, who is relentlessly bullied at school for being different and is harshly controlled at home by her fanatical mother. It’s gonna be “a night you'll never forget.” This revised version, first staged in 2012, has music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, book by Lawrence D. Cohen, and is based on the novel by Stephen King. “A strong, effective and remarkably coherent piece of terrific total theatre.” - The New York Post Music by Michael Gore Lyrics by Dean Pitchford Book by Lawrence D.
